From Toledo to Toledo Exhibit

Loli Chirón is a talented, prolific artist from Toledo, Spain. Her visit to our area this year will be highlighted by the exhibit and sale of her paintings. Her collection will be available through two fronts. First, her work will be featured at the Old West End Festival on June 5 and 6. Chirón will arrive late on June 5, then be part of the celebration on Sunday, June 6. She is being hosted at that venue by friends and Old West End residents Mercedes Vaquero and Douglas Forsyth.

The second venue for Chirón’s paintings is a gallery exhibit at Inside Angles Custom Framing Gallery opening on June 5 and remaining on display until July ! 8. Located at 909 S. McCord Rd. in Holland, the gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 pm. The exhibit will feature over 50 of Chiron’s paintings. An opening party is planned for Friday, June 11, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This exhibit and sale hopefully represent the first of many regular artistic exchanges between the two Toledos. Vaquero convinced Inside Angles to take this project on. We are hoping to use this cooperation as a model for other galleries and artists from both cities to create similar projects.

Inside Angles will host a meeting on Wednesday, June 16, at 2 p.m. to discuss a functional network. We are working to assemble galleries in Toledo (Ohio) interested in hosting the exchange artists, and artists interested in cooperating with galleries in Toledo (Spain.)

The Arts Commission of Greater Toledo, The Association of Two Toledos, the Toledo Artists’ Club are just a! few of the groups interested in this experiment so far.

Art is a great motivator! We are very excited about this exchange. Chirón’s images are very appealing, and her talent is obvious. IA Owner, Sue Runkle, has lived her whole life here, in the Toledo area; she is interested to discover the similarities and differences with Chirón, a Toledoan from Spain.

Jacob David and Joel Washing, producers of the local documentary Two Toledos, will be appearing at Walt Churchill's Market (3320 Briarfield Blvd., Maumee, OH 43537) though May 24. You'll have a chance to meet with the pair and purchase the documentary DVD.

The Documentary:

Visually rich cinematography of the Toledo, Ohio skyline and the ancient architecture of Toledo, Spain illuminate the physical differences of the cities, while in-depth interviews with artists show the deep similarities between the cultures through the universal need to create.

The Background:

Two Toledos, the debut film of documentary filmmakers Jacob David and Joel Washing, grew out of a visit to the Iberian Peninsula in 2001, where they studied the Spanish language. David and Washing are co-owners of Above the Shop Studios, in Toledo, Ohio.

Above the Shop Studios today announces the DVD release of the film Two Toledos. On sale now through the website twotoledos.com and at select stores including The Original Sub Shop & Deli at 402 Broadway.

In an exploration of cultural exchange through art, documentary filmmakers Jacob David and Joel Washing focus on two distinctly different cities with the same name.

Visually rich cinematography of the Toledo, Ohio skyline and the ancient architecture of Toledo, Spain illuminate the physical differences of the cities, while in-depth interviews with artists show the deep similarities between the cultures through the universal human need to create.

The broadcast was a little fouled up at WGTE...

I know it is already late today, but...

We want to apologize to everyone who watched the film last night. WGTE had some technical difficulties and the sound went off sync midway through the film.

To remedy this WGTE has agreed to re-air the movie tonight (Nov. 17) at 10pm. So if you would like to see the entire film again with the mouths and words matching up, tune in tonight on WGTE TV 30 at 10pm.

The movie will also show again on Sunday morning at 10am.

After three years of work we can finally give you the opportunity to view Two Toledos. We are very happy to announce that our broadcast partner, WGTE, will air the recently completed documentary on November 16th at 8:00 pm. If you’re busy on Thursday night Two Toledos will re-air on Sunday November 19th at 10:00 am.

Project Update

We've moved into the editing phase of the documentary. This will take some time. We'll probably barricade ourselves in the studio until editing is finished. We are very happy and excited to begin editing, because it is probably the most satisfying stage of the entire process.

Two Toledos will be premiered in Toledo, Ohio at the end of September 2006. We are very happy that this will coincide nicely with the 75th Anniversary celebration of our sister city relationship with Toledo, Spain. Check our blog regularly for updates on the premiere and release of the DVD.
